Moving to Guernsey with pets

Guernsey, Open Market

For many people relocating to Guernsey, bringing their pet with them is an essential part of the move. The good news is that moving pets to the island is usually straightforward. However, there are still a few important rules and practical considerations to understand before you travel. With the right preparation, your pet can settle into island life just as happily as you do. Here’s what you need to know…

Bringing pets to Guernsey from the UK

For those relocating from the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man or Jersey, the process is simple. Pets such as dogs, cats and ferrets can usually travel to Guernsey directly from these locations without the need for an import licence, pet passport or additional health documentation, provided they travel directly from within the Common Travel Area.

This helps make the relocation process very easy. That said, it’s still wise to ensure your pet’s microchip and vaccination records are up to date and to check with your vet before travel.

Moving pets from further afield

If you’re relocating from outside the Common Travel Area, additional rules apply under the pet travel scheme.

In most cases your pet will need:

  • A microchip
  • A valid rabies vaccination
  • A 21-day wait after vaccination before travel
  • An EU Pet Passport or official veterinary health certificate

Dogs must also receive tapeworm treatment 24–120 hours before entering Guernsey. Depending on where your pet is travelling from, further requirements such as rabies blood tests may also apply.

Because regulations can change, it’s always best to confirm the latest requirements before you travel.

Choosing the right travel route

Pets typically travel to Guernsey via ferry or aircraft with an approved carrier.

For many relocating pet owners, ferries between the Channel Islands and France or the UK can be the simplest option, as pets can travel alongside their owners depending on the operator’s rules.

Specialist pet transport companies can also assist with more complex relocations from overseas.

Planning ahead is key

Relocating with pets always requires a bit more planning than a standard move.

Here are a few tips that can make the process smoother:

  • Speak to your vet early to confirm vaccinations and paperwork
  • Check travel rules with your chosen ferry or airline
  • Prepare a travel crate or carrier your pet is comfortable with
  • Keep medical and microchip records handy during travel

If you’re planning to rent, it’s important to explore pet-friendly options early, as availability can vary. Being open with landlords or our team at Swoffers about your pet’s behaviour, routine and any previous references can also help strengthen your application.

Animal welfare organisations such as the GSPCA are also a helpful source of guidance on transporting animals to and from the island.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said: “Our biggest advice for those bringing their pets into Guernsey is to plan early to help ensure a smooth transition. Make sure you follow the most up‑to‑date import requirements. Your vet can help guide you through the process, so everything is in place before you travel. Once you arrive, allow your pets time to settle — especially cats — as new smells, sounds, and spaces can take some getting used to.

“The GSPCA offers advice, microchipping, welfare support, and other services including pet boarding. We want every family and every pet moving to the island to feel welcome, prepared, and safe in their new home.”

Settling your pet into island life

Once you arrive, Guernsey is a fantastic place to own a pet, there’s a strong community of pet owners and access to experienced veterinary care. With miles of scenic cliff paths, countryside walks and dog-friendly outdoor spaces, the island offers plenty of opportunities to exercise and explore.

Beaches also make for a wholesome and fun walk for you and your dog. A few beaches do have seasonal restrictions, so it’s worth checking before you go.

Dogs must be licensed once they reach six months old, with licences issued through the parish authorities, and a £10 annual dog tax payable per dog.

Most pets adapt quickly to island life, and many owners find Guernsey one of the best places they’ve lived for raising a happy, active animal.
